About This Work

The composition is organized as a grid of narrow vertical columns, each carrying a stack of short, parallel horizontal strokes that subtly shift in height to create undulating bands across the surface. Color moves in a measured gradient from vermillion and coral at the upper left through goldenrod and pale yellow to cool cerulean and slate at the lower left, before yielding to a mass of grays and blacks that dominate the right side. A broad diagonal seam runs from lower left to upper right, where the density and curvature of the lines increase, compressing the space and intensifying the contrast between chromatic and achromatic zones. The repetition of small linear units suggests a kind of tally or ledger, in which minute variations in length, spacing, and alignment accumulate into a larger rhythmic pattern that visually registers as a form of primitive bookkeeping across the field.
